"That is not what I said!!" is probably the most commonly heard excuse after a less than successful contact with the written press. Of course, after a TV interview no-one would ever dare say that.

You do, however, often hear people call out: "But that is not what I meant!!"

Still, journalists who incorrectly reproduce what you say are more of an exception than a rule. You should make sure not to leave anything you say open to interpretation.
